the unlikely combination of the merck label's experimental sounds (glitchy idm with hiphop and techno leanings) and drum 'n bass strikes again at the weekly event at spot6. for those unfamiliar, the venue is a fixed-up two-floor spot in lakeview/wrigleyville, but not the place where dan bell played "that one time".

the morr music label's saccharine pop aesthetic may have begun to blossom into something larger. while the electronic roots of the label still show through, the pop aspect has sidestepped into the rock realm with ms. john soda, whom, although the low name on the totem pole, will probably draw the most people to the show. b fleishmann has a couple of nice (if safe) pop-oriented but very electronic records outside of the morr label. he's a relatively new addition to the roster, but fits in quite well.

christian kleine is definitely my pick on this triple bill. he carries his pop sensibilities a little less on his sleeve, and as a result has thrown out some lush but slightly darker downtempo gems. particularly recommended is his 'beyond repair' album on city centre offices, a morr music sublabel.

the owners of kompakt (who are also important artists on the label) come through chicago! kompakt has been one of the more influential and successful techno/house labels to appear over the past several years, with over 80 releases, several sublabels, its own record store and distribution company, and perhaps most importantly, its own sound. starting from bass-heavy minimal house not unlike wolfgang voigt's (aka mike ink) studio 1 series or the jerky stripped-down loops of the profan label, kompakt evolved to include more smoothed out techno-house, extreme experimental house, straight techno, and even beatless soundscapes.
