for an event entitled "from berlin to chicago", the legendary DJ RUSH makes a stop back in his hometown. from his beginnings in chicago house, he's now one of the hardest techno djs on the european circuit, making the clubbier hard techno sounds of marco carola and adam beyer seem like child's play. he appears with labelmate and protege (who has been broken out on his own for some time) MIKE WADE. mike has recently become another in the handful of chicago musicians to land a record on the legendary tresor label. i really got into mike's 3rd release on his label 'archetype' - very well-soundscaped dancefloor techno with a james ruskin feel.

not too familiar with the venue. it sounds like it's in the old MINT space on lake and green. yes it's probably changed hands five times since being MINT - a guy gets old, ya know. they've got a 3 am saturday license.

this should be a pretty cool show of new (or 'nu', some might say) italo-disco from these dutch guys. MACHO CAT GARAGE turns out a funkier, housier edge than LEGOWELT's harder version of italo, while ORGUE ELECTRONIQUE sticks to a more stripped-down electro feel.

the fireside is normally home to hardcore punk rock shows, and opens its doors to all ages. it's a trashed venue, but cool in its own way.

"what is this guy doing?" is what i thought to myself when i heard marco carola at karma sometime in 1999. we had gotten a call from someone that he'd be appearing on short notice, and to call everyone we knew. the flow was seamless, three-deck mixing of electro and techno - so that even when you heard the mp3 afterwards, you could barely hear him dropping tracks in and out. then i heard "open system", carola's album from 2001, and i thought again "what is this guy doing?" but hardly in the same way. his djing, along with his production, has apparently traversed into a risky musical territory that threatens to forsake his older form in the name of reaching a wider audience. you have to respect what this guy has done - with his question series and 1000 series - but as an artist, i'm not sure he's the ticket to the future.
