DARKSTAR 7

TODD SINES feat NATACHA LABELLE - live (planet e)
VELOCETTE - live (parallel)
SOULTEK feat JACKIE KAY - live (kompute)
APPARAT - live (bpitch control)
MILES TILMANN - live (toytronic)
PROJECTILE - live (parotic)
ADAM JOHNSON - live (parotic)
MATT MERCER - live (weekend)
M50 - dj (wnur)

this is a very ambitious live electronic music PA line-up. the event keeps the lines blurred between what belongs on the dancefloor and what doesn't, and with the caliber of the talent - in various stages of up-and-coming and more established - there's little to argue with, especially for $5.
note the early start time, location, and cover charge.

todd sines' new material on carl craig's planet e label has turned a few heads, with natacha labelle's mournful musings over a quirky backdrop of subbass, off-key pads, and clunky percussive fills. comparisons to herbert and dani siciliano are inevitable.

a pretty unusual booking is velocette, a west coast artist who's been making mellow, intricate techno for 8-9 years. he has a few records on sf-based reflective records run by jonah sharp (spacetime continuum) and has released a number of records on the parallel label.

in a related vein to velocette are the parotic music guys, adam johnson and projectile. adam johnson's release as aj hunter on parotic is excellent chugging techno-house with well-designed sounds and tunes, and he has done some interesting less-beat-oriented work in addition.

the logistics of this event, with all of these live PAs, should be pretty interesting...

TITONTON @ smart bar

TITONTON
NOLE
MERCEDEZ BEN
MANI
FLIP

the gramaphone techno showcase crew comes correct with one of the more underrated u.s. techno talents, titonton duvante. his work on labels like residual, metamorphic, and starbaby reflects his influences - which span from the deepest detroit techno and electro to drum n bass and broken beat from the likes of 4 hero and dego.

MATTHEW DEAR (plus 8)
CARLOS SOUFFRONT (crush collision)
MARKO KATIC (antenna)
JOSH WERNER (antenna)
CHRISTINA SHERADON

the midwest's fastest-rising techno guy, matthew dear comes to chicago to lay down some nasty perlon-style (funky minimal glitch) house. his records under the artist name 'false' on hawtin's plus 8 label have garnered quite a bit of attention. he's coming with carlos souffront, who has always been one of my favorite djs, skillfully showcasing one of the sickest techno, house, and classic dance collections in existence.

josh takes a step to the side of the thursday gramaphone techno showcases and comes in to headline on a friday night. josh's selections are always diverse in techno, house, and electro - it's an education, but it's presented in a funky, dancefloor-friendly way. with the generally larger friday crowd, this should be a good time. with jerome d from groove distribution.
